The Fibromyalgia Advent Calendar | Day 8: Restless Legs

Hoo boy. If you’ve ever suffered from Restless Leg Syndrome you know EXACTLY where I’m coming from. Solidarity.

I had to laugh at the NHS website’s description of what it feels like – “strange sensations in your legs”. I mean, it’s true, but it also makes it sound like a curious and interesting phenomenon, like when I tried a fried egg flavoured crisp a few weeks ago and it tasted so disconcertingly realistic I was genuinely rattled.

It’s quite hard to describe RLS to someone who’s never experienced it. A lot of people liken it to a “creepy crawly” sensation under the skin, but when I get it it’s more like an intense pressure that’s only alleviated when I move. Frequently.

I’ve had RLS for as long as I can remember, but as child it was only occasionally that I was bothered by it. Since I got fibro I get it at least two or three times a week. It’s worse when I’m tired, and it’s far, far worse at night. A hot bath tends to stop it from happening, or alleviate it when it’s there. (I’ve been known to get up in the middle of the night and sit in one because it’s UNBEARABLE.)

By the way, although it’s most common in the legs, you can totally get it elsewhere. Ask me about it when I’m awake at 2am debating the mechanics of chewing my own arms off.
